Altering Kilts

Altering Kilts

Wash day for Clan Cameron Modern

Kilts get altered for many reasons. They might be a family heirloom, or there have been life changes, maybe someone picked up one second-hand and wants it tweaked.

Some alterations are easy and some are more involved.

The easiest and least expensive alteration is moving buckles and straps. That would be the under apron strap and the buckles on the pleats. We do not alter the straps attached to the apron nor the buckle near the buttonhole/vent. The pieces have to be removed and picked clean of bits of thread, possibly re-worked or replaced. Sometimes it involves opening up the lining seams to re-stitch without having the stitches show on the lining and restrict the movement of the lining.

To watch a kiltmaker take a razor blade and a seam ripper to your kilt, can be terrorizing, but it has to be done.

If this alteration does not fix the problem the aprons can be tweaked, providing there is extra fabric hidden in the kilt. And a partial disassembly begins: The top band has to be removed, the fringe, the buckles/straps, the lining and interfacing. And, all stray threads removed and the aprons pressed, re-marked, re-attached and all the bits get put back.

What happens if there isn’t extra fabric in the kilt….

To be continued… pics will be attached as well. Thank you for your patience.
